Windows Update
The Windows Update Challenge
IT administrators must ensure systems, specifically servers, stay
online and available 24X7 365 days a year. This requires constant system
updates, driver updates and other configuration changes. Any configuration
changes must improve 24X7X365 coverage, must improve system reliability and
must require little management after the changes are applied.
Problems can occur if these updates and configuration changes are not
thoroughly tested before they are rolled out to production servers and PCs.
One significant challenge, how do you test new software, apply system
updates or new drivers with confidence that it won’t cause
system corruption and downtime?
The Solution
By placing PCs or servers in ShadowMode, IT administrators or users can
install software applications, updates, drivers and test them without making
changes to the disk.
The IT administrator or user can test to ensure all files were properly
installed and there are no conflicts with existing software or drivers. Once
it is determined the system is running properly, those changes can be
commited to disk with the comfort of knowing the PC or server will function
the way it should. When a system doesn’t react well to an update or new
application install, the changes can simply be discarded when the ShadowMode
session is ended.
